A lot of Portuguese skaters competed at the Amsterdamn Am two weeks ago, it was a sign that skateboarding is in good form in Portugal, and the 4th stop of Volcom Stone’s Wild In The Parks Europe last weekend delivered!
The event was held at Monsanto Skatepark in Lisbon, located in the biggest city « lung », a nice park where citizens use to escape the city madness, with fresh air and the shadows of trees.
That was perfect to relax in between jam sessions, and prevent overheating, the day being particularly hot, and the sessions particularly wild.
With over a 160 skaters entering the contest, it was a bit hectic in the qualifying heats, but everyone seemed to find his rhythm after the usual first 2 minutes madness.
The 3 zones consisted on a manual pad with a long curb, a pyramid and a table jump with a flat-down rail. It was tight but luckily there was no serious crash to report.
In the 14 and under division, some of the youngest skate already like grown men, it’s not everyday you see these guys going overcrooked on the rails. Those guys were skateboarding non stop all day… you know how those critters are when motivated!
Soon the finalists were announced and the wembley gap/ big rail replaced the funbox. Tiago Lopes went technical with some flip five o on the ledges and took the 3rd place, young Gustavo Ribeiro was on fire, masterizing the big rail and took the 2nd place and Bruno Senra took the win with some solid tricks in all 3 zones. Congrats and maybe see you at the European Champs in Copenhagen!

To fuel this crowd there was tons of candies, and 2 special pizza deliveries filled everybody’s stomach for the afternoon. Of course there was also free drinks to rehydrate everyone.
In the 15 and over division, with over 80 skaters in, the cut for the final was sharp, and with only 5 guys qualified for the Euro WITP Champs, the show was full on. The level was pretty good with in the end Bernard Aragao finishing 5th with a good feeble down the rail and massive tricks on the pyramid. David Pinto was another standout, landing back-to-back bangers on every spot with a flip front board on the small rail for example; he finished at the 4th place. Filipe Mendes was going technical on the pyramid and the 2 other spots, earning himself the 3rd place, while Manuel Rafael impressed the judges with serious hammers into the 2nd place. But Anibal was on top of everyone that day skateboarding really solid with a huge smile all day, and killing it on the course he got a well deserved victory.

The last final of the day was the Open division one, where the general level stepped up considerably, and everybody was cheering at each landed tricks. It was a good show to witness. Ex aeqo 5th place we had Joao Vida and Ruben Gamito sharing the podium with Ruben taking home a new pair of folding Electric Sunglasses and 50 euros for the Hype of the day (smiling all day while landing bangers such as a massive kickflip to flat on the pyramid). Rafael Alves took the 4th place, Igor Smith the 3rd and Diogo Smith took the 2nd place after destroying the park all day with tech/gnar tricks such as a varial flip backlip on the small rail… Duarte Pombo took the win with big tricks and got assaulted by his friends after landing a perfect flip backside lipslide on the big rail. Good job everyone!
The day ended with a product toss and then everybody went home all smiles after this long day of action.
Thanks to everyone that showed up at the contest, to Marta and the skate club for the help, to Volcom Portugal staff, to Electric for the extra prizes, Ricardo Damasio for the clip and Andre Carvalho for the pics.
